Bathroom writers seem to have pretty lofty goals for the casual setting – they want to share their philosophies, prove their points, spill their secrets. The conversations rarely get anywhere, but they provide great entertainment for readers.
I’ll take you through some real-life examples here – yes, every quote here is real, found in the SEL and Lazenby. (I have only read scrawl in ladies’ rooms, but men, feel free to chime in with your bathroom writings.) With women, there are a few different types of bathroom scrawl, as I see it.
1) The Debate Club
It seems as if people always want duke it out in bathrooms. They want to talk politics, they want to talk religion. You see a lot of conversations with starting points like, “Trust God <3!” Then someone will branch off that with “That’s horrible advice!” Maybe someone else will agree with the first person, “Amen to that!” And that’ll be that. We don’t get evidence for the beliefs on either side. The reader is left unsatisfied, the argument unresolved.
